Which disinfectant do they use?
Not all disinfectants are created equal. Some may be watered down or less effective, and unfortunately, some of the least effective are also less expensive. That’s why some nail salons use a cheaper brand when they can. The industry standard for exceptional cleanliness requires Barbicide®, an EPA-certified, hospital-grade disinfectant. However, Barbicide® is expensive, so some nail salons may not use it for all their reusable implements. Do they use a medical-grade autoclave?
State law in Florida does require that all nail salons soak their reusable implements and Pedi tubs in Barbicide® for 10 minutes. However, the State of Florida Board of Barbering and Cosmetology does not require sterilization of reusable implements in a medical-grade autoclave, but this is a best practice for proper sterilization. At Cre8 Salon & Spa, we follow all protocol with Barbicide® sterilization and also sterilize our reusable implements in our medical-grade autoclave for 20 minutes before use. An autoclave is the only device that can guarantee complete sterilization, and it uses a high-pressure steam process to ensure that implements are fully cleaned and sterilized. At Cre8 Salon & Spa, non-reusable implements are discarded or given to the clients on which they were used at their request.
Are sterilization and cleanliness procedures documented?
The only way to ensure that all procedures for cleaning and sterilization are completed regularly is to have a strict regimen of documentation. At Cre8 Salon & Spa, we ensure that Pedi tubs are washed and sterilized with a 10-minute Barbicide® bath, and hat all reusable implements are disinfected in Barbicide® and in the medical-grade autoclave, and we document the time of each procedure. This ensures that all cleanliness and sterilization policies are followed before these tools are used for another client. Do they turn away clients who are sick?
